TASK EXPECTATIONS

ELABORATION

  1. Idea Development a. clearly answer all parts of the prompt b. maintain a focus appropriate to the prompt c. thoroughly develop the ideas, using appropriate/relevant details, explanations, and exemplifications d. ensure that all ideas have clear relevance to the thesis e. avoid unnecessary repetition of arguments/information
  2. Use of Sources a. demonstrate a detailed understanding of the source(s) b. critically analyze and evaluate all the ideas in the sources to develop your own stance c. choose relevant ideas/parts from the source(s) which effectively support your argument d. use a sufficient amount of citations to effectively support your argument (not too many so citations do not dominate, or not too few) ORGANIZATION

Introduction – Your introductory paragraph should... a. provide appropriate background information for the topic, e., a relevant technique such as the definition of a key term, academic/historical background, etc. b. include a thesis statement Thesis – Your thesis should... a. provide a direct answer to the question(s) b. be appropriately signaled c. be concise (one or two sentences) d. explicitly state the focus of your paper and may: e. include details of the scope or sub-arguments

Paragraph Structure a. divide your paragraphs logically, including a single idea in each paragraph b. include a topic sentence that clearly shows the main idea in each paragraph c. introduce and develop the supporting points in a logical order d. use linkers/transitions to show how ideas are related within and between paragraphs e. integrate the citations effectively (may use the ICE method) to maintain the smooth flow of the paragraphs 4.
