A small formula to find whether a truss system is statically determinate or statically indeterminate is given below;

If, n=number of members of the truss system

r= number of external restrains or reactions

j=number of joints or nodes,

Truss system is determinate when,

n + r= 2j eq. (1)

Truss system is indeterminate when,

n + r> 2j eq. (2)

Truss system is unstable when

n + r < 2j eq. (3)

There are several methods that can be used for the analysis of pin- jointed frames which are statically determinate. The choice depends on the usefulness and applicability of the method. The different methods to be used are:

  1. Methods of resolutions at the nodes
  2. Method of sections
  3. Method of force coefficient
  4. Method of substitution of members

However, in our structure class, we’ve learnt only two methods; Method of joints and Method of sections. One of these two methods will be used to analyze the forces in the members of the pin- jointed plane frames.

 Apparatus

The materials that were used to conduct this experiment are as follows:

1.) Triangular pin jointed plane cantilever frames suspended from two balances. 2.) A total of 5 loads, 10N each. 3.) 1m ruler 4.) 2 load hangers

  1. Measurement Methods (Procedures)

  2. We measured the length of the members of the frame in terms of distances from the center of the pin joints. Then we measure the perpendicular height of the triangle to check the accuracy of our measuring.

  3. We place a series of increasing weights (10N to 70 N in 10N increments) on the load hanger and recorded the reaction and member loads.

  4. After that we plot graphs of reactions verses applied weight, and member load verses applied weight.

  5. We compared our results with values derived from graphical analysis of the frame.

  6. And we also compared our results with values derived from calculations.

  7. Finally we gave reasons for the differences between our experimental results and the two sets of theoretical results.

  8. Analysis and Result
