PS24D/PSYC2002: ABNORMAL PSYCHOLOGY

COURSE OUTLINE

FALL 2022

Lecturer: Dr. Tracey-Ann Coley Email Address: traceyannc73@yahoo Lecture: Mondays, 5pm – 7pm Tutorial: Tuesdays, 4pm – 5pm (To be confirmed)

General Description: This course in Abnormal Psychology is an introduction to the important concepts, presentations and diagnostic approaches currently employed by psychologist and psychiatrist in understanding variations from the norm in human thoughts and behaviours. This undergraduate course is not intended to achieve full proficiency in students’ grasp of psychopathology but, instead, will lay the foundation for more advanced work at the level of graduate school. The course is, therefore, a crucial foundational ingredient for those who might have future ambitions in the areas of clinical and applied psychology as well as clinical social work and related fields.

In this course abnormal behaviour is examined through a developmental lens across the life span. The course will provide a survey of the genetic, physiological and environmental aspects of behavioural problems, with a focus on stress, fear and mood- based disorders. Diagnostic and assessment procedure are presented. Treatment of psychological disorders is presented along with case examples of psychopathology occurring in adults, children and families.

Objectives Students should be able to:  Reflect an understanding of normal and abnormal behaviours because of their engagement with course material.  Explain the different theories on abnormal behaviour.  Recognize the core features of the major mental/behavioural disorders.  Reflect awareness of the different types of treatment modalities available to those with mental/behavioural disorders.  Acquire an appreciation of the ethical principles and responsibilities associated with this field.  Acquire a sense of principled empathy for individuals who vary from the norm.

Content Presentation: Lecture and discussions; audiovisuals.

Course evaluation Group Presentation: 20% Mid-semester exam: (wk. 7, subject to change) 20% Final examinations: 60%

ASSESSMENT  There will be a mid-term examination consisting of multiple-choice questions that will comprise 20% of your final grade.  Students will be assigned to groups and prepare a power-point presentation (30 – 40 minutes) on a movie character (from listing provided on OurVle). The sign-up sheet for each movie will be available through the course container on OurVle. Each student in the group must state how they contributed to the presentation as those who do not participate will receive a grade of zero. Except in exceptional circumstances, groups that are not prepared to present on the appointed day will receive a grade of zero. The presentation is worth 20% of the final grade.  At the end of the semester there will be a final exam consisting of multiple choice questions that will comprise the remaining 60% of your final grade.

Presentation Guidelines:  Formulate a diagnosis for the character using the DSM-5, be sure to provide justification for your diagnostic formulation.  Use a theory to explain how the character developed the illness.  Provide two questions for discussion with the class.  Be creative

Relevant information that should be considered as you prepare the presentation:  Psychological Dysfunction - breakdown in cognitive, emotional, behavioural and social functioning.  Personal Distress - difficulty performing appropriate and expected roles; impairment set in the context of person’s background; history of distress.
