BENEFITS THAT CAN BE DERIVED FROM EMBRACING ICT IN THE STUDY AND

TEACHING OF LAW.

education sector not being an exception. ICT tools are now being used everywhere from homes

to workplaces and even schools. ICT tools are improving the life of people and making work

are talking of techniques and devices based on new technological tools and different supports

and channels of information. 1 The use of ICT tools have become the norm in the educational

sector the legal sector not being an exception. This essay will focus on some of the ict tools that

The first ICT tool that can be used in the study and teaching of law is the internet. Students can

make use of the internet to access any legal information they might need. They can use the

internet to access case briefs and online journals for the purpose of studying. They can also use

the internet to access electronic storage where they can store all their documents without fear of

losing them. Teachers can also use the internet to access different teaching methods they can use.

Another ICT tool that can be used in the study and teaching of law is e-learning platforms like

google classroom 2 .These platforms allow students to interact with outside the classroom allows

teachers to organize even without being physically present. Students get the opportunity to ask

question they were not able to ask in class. They also get to interact with other classmates and

learn new things from them. They are also able to record lessons and access them at their own

convenience. This makes it easy for them to revise. In case a student is unable to participate in a

lesson, he can always get access to the recorded lesson and not miss anything that has been

taught.

Stimulation software is another ICT too that can be used in the study and teaching of law.

Stimulation software is based on the process off modelling a real phenomenom with a set of

mathematical formulas. 3 These software can be used to create courtroom proceedings. This

allows students to have firsthand experience so that they do not encounter problems when they

start practicing. It also helps teachers to know the performance of their students and how to

further improve their performance. It also helps students in their legal profession since they will

have enough experience and will be more diligent in their work.

Another ICT tool that can be used in the study and teaching of law is research software. These

are software platforms that are made of tools that enable research by facilitating the manipulation

of all types of research data across the world. 4 The use of these platform will allow students to

interact with other students from different countries. They will be able to share ideas and find

solutions to legal problems across the world. They will also be able to learn new things and

increase their knowledge of the law. These platforms also allow students to access other peoples

views about legal issues around the world.

The fourth ICT tool that can be used in the study and teaching of law is electronic textbooks.

Most legal textbooks are expensive making it difficult for students to purchase them. Students

can use access various legal textbooks online without having to purchase them. These electronic

textbooks can be accessed using devices like laptop, computer, tablets and smartphones. This

makes learning easy for students who are unable to afford legal textbooks. They can also get a

variety of textbooks that they can read to further enhance their understanding of the law. Students

are also able to keep up with the latest legal information. Examples of sites students can access

electronic books include Saylor Academy, Openstax, Project Gutenberg and Open textbook

library. These electronic textbooks comes with features that makes highlighting and notes taking

easier.

Online legal course is another ICT tool that can be used in the study and teaching of law. 5 Legal

online courses are mean of study that involves online learning. Students are given lessons

through video calls and online meetings. These courses are offered by certified universities

around the world for a specific period of time. Students who complete the course are given

certificates. Online legal course can be taken from anywhere in the word. Students do not need to

be physically present to take the course. The course covers areas like law of contract, criminal

law and constitutional law. The courses are designed in a way that makes it possible for students

to work even when still taking the course.

The final ICT tool that can be used in the study and teaching of law is virtual law library

library is a kind of library which provides portal to information that is available electronically

everywhere. 6 These are libraries that can be found online where students can get access to library

books, cases, articles and journals they need. Students and teachers can get access to library

books anywhere even in the comfort of their homes. This makes it easy for students who do not

have libraries closer to their homes get access to books without having to travel a long distance.

writing e-mails and maintaining proper internet etiquettes. ICT tools like the virtual library

serves as an important tool for getting information on cases, books and statutes. Students can

only make the most out of these tools if they have the skills to do so. This is possible if ICT tools

are embraced in the study and teaching of law. Students can learn how to use apps like Microsoft

teams, google classroom, judy and dennis law which will make it easy for them to find cases

when they are in practice.

The fourth benefit that can be derived from embracing ict in the study and teaching of law is

improvement in teaching methods 14 .Teachers can use various apps and online resources to make

improvements in the old ways of teaching and make lessons more interesting for students. With

the help of ICT tools teachers are able to make notes in the form of slides with pictures and

videos making lessons more entertaining for students. This also makes students easily remember

what they have been taught. Teachers can also use ICT tools to encourage students to develop

their creative skills and understanding of the law. Using apps like google classrooms and

microsoft teams, teachers can get feedbacks from students and also answer their questions. The

teachers can use this feedback to further improve on their teaching methods.

Another benefit that can be derived from embracing ICT tools in the study and teaching of law is

it saves time 15 .Using ICT tools like computers and online softwares , teachers can make notes

faster and easier. Teachers can use tools like powerpoint to make presentations for the easier

understanding of students. This saves time. Teachers will also get enough time to concentrate on

students with special needs. Using ICT tools, taking of attendance and marking of assignments

become easier for teachers.

Lastly, the use of ICT tools in the study and teaching of law brings is innovation. Students and

teachers are able to access online libraries and research materials easily. This saves time allowing

them to conduct more research and come up with new ideas to solve legal issues. Teachers can

also use their time to participate in legal aid programs and offer legal advice to people in the

community. They can also use the time to come up with ideas to improve the quality of teaching

and how best to help students.

In conclusion, this essay talked about some of the ICT tools that can be used in the study and

teaching of law and the benefits that can be derived from embracing ICT tools in the teaching

and study of law. Some of the ICT tools that can be used in the study and teaching of law

includes e-learning platforms, stimulation software, research software, electronic textbook,

online legal course and virtual library. The benefits that can be derived from embracing ICT tools

in the study and teaching of law includes engagement in classroom activities, improvement in

knowledge retention, encouraging individual learning, learning of useful skills, improvement in

teaching, saves time and innovation.
