SECURITY SUPERVISOR TRAINING

A security supervisor is in charge of coordinating and overseeing the security staff in a building or

within a designated area. Their responsibilities focus on devising strategies, appointing personnel, and

implementing protocols that would ensure the safety of an establishment, goods, and the people

inside.

Takes proactive steps to provide a safe and secure working environment to staff and visitors. Provides

specialized security for and monitors access to limited and restricted access areas such as inventory

areas, network equipment areas, and employee files and confidential records.

A security supervisor is an employee who protects a business's assets and oversees the activity of

other security guards. They have duties that can vary depending on their work environment, but they

all have responsibilities that help them create and implement strategies to prevent and respond to

potential security threats. Learning more about the duties of this role can help you decide whether to

pursue it. In this article, we define a security supervisor's duties and explain what qualifications

employers typically require.

Security Supervisor Responsibilities and Duties

 Supervise and oversee security functions in an organization.

 Train and schedule programs and functions to security personnel.

 Evaluate, assess and analyze performance of security personnel.

 Initiate disciplinary measures wherever necessary.

 Provide security to office staff, buildings and properties.

 Keep the premises free from all kinds of dangers.

 Screen visitors before allowing them to enter the premises.

 Maintain all security devices and products in good working condition.

 Develop and implement preventative measures against accidents, thefts and other risks.

 Ensure compliance of applicable policies and regulations while implementing security

measures.

What are a security supervisor's duties?

Supervise security guards

A security supervisor is responsible for supervising lower-level security guards. They ensure that all

security guards are performing their expected duties. A supervisor can also work with security

managers to create training programs so that all security guards can have the knowledge to fulfil their

responsibilities.

Maintain daily records

A security supervisor keeps diligent records so that they can document all security-related instances

that occur at their place of employment. They update these records daily so that all documentation is

current and relevant. Some incidents that they may record include security breaches and accidents. A

security supervisor includes as many details as possible in these records, including the place and time

of occurrence and the affected parties. They're responsible for recording these details immediately

and transferring them to a digital system if their employer requires it.

1. Learn their place of employment

A security supervisor is responsible for familiarizing themselves with their working site. When they

have a thorough knowledge of their place of employment, they can implement security measures and

detect potential issues more effectively. For example, if a security supervisor works at a shopping

mall, they can learn about the placement of individual stores so that they may respond to incidents

more quickly. If they work at a hotel, they can learn about different escape points and stairwell

locations so that they can understand how to evacuate guests in case of an emergency.

2. Conduct patrols

While this employee has some duties that are supervisory, a security supervisor is also responsible for

conducting patrols of their place of employment. They may conduct patrols of indoor areas that are

available to the public and areas that are only accessible by employees. They may also patrol outdoor

areas by walking, or they may have a golf cart or another vehicle to operate if their assigned area is

too large to cover via walking. As a security supervisor is conducting patrols, they may also monitor

the activity of security guards to ensure that they're performing their expected duties.

3. Assist the security manager

A security supervisor oversees the activities of security guards, but they report to the company's

security manager. Even though the security manager has authority over the security supervisor, the

supervisor can assist the manager with various tasks. For example, the supervisor may assist the

manager in dealing with incidents. The supervisor may provide information about the incident to the

manager if they were present during its occurrence. They may also offer guidance on how to best

manage the incident so that the manager has all the details to make a final decision.

4. Lead emergency response drills

A security supervisor is responsible for leading emergency response drills. These drills occur during

non-emergency scenarios, and they help employees understand how to act in an emergency. A

security supervisor can go through several scenarios so that employees can prepare for various

circumstances. This employee may conduct these drills on a schedule that their place of employment

establishes. They can monitor how other employees act during these drills and determine what

improvements they can make in their responses.

5. Perform investigations and hold interviews

A security supervisor may be responsible for performing investigations of incidents and conducting

interviews with witnesses. If they have these duties, it's important for them to adhere to their

company's protocols and remain unbiased so that they conduct a fair investigation. They also abide by

individuals' legal rights so that they can protect the integrity of the investigation and the reputation of

their place of employment.

6. Conduct inspections for physical and safety hazards

A security supervisor is responsible for performing inspections for physical and safety hazards. For

example, they may find tripping hazards like slippery surfaces as they're conducting their patrols.

Instead of leaving these hazards unattended, they can stay close to them so that they may warn

customers and others of them. They can call the appropriate personnel to arrive to handle the hazard
