Ciprofloxacin 46

Fluoroquinolone

- A bacteriocidal that inhibits enzymes for DNA

replication

- PO

- IV

- Al, Mg, Fe salts, sucralfate, dairy, decrease absorption of

cipro

- Plasma levels of theophylline can increase with cipro.

- Plams levelsof warfarin can increase with cipro.

- Do not use in patients under 18 unless they have UTI from E. Coli or

anthrax

- Increase risk of C infection due to destruction of normal flora

- Pregnancy risk C (Animal studies show risk to fetus, no human

studies)

- Gi discomfort (nasue, vomiting, diarrhea)

- Achilles tendon rupture

- Yeast infections can occure

- Severe sunburn (phototoxcitity)

- Treats gram-positive & gram-negative bacteria

- Treats urinary, respiratory, GI, bone joint, skin, and

soft tissue infections

- Treats anthrax

- Alternative parenteral antibiotics for severe infections

- Administer with food to reduce GI

discomfort

- Give lower does to client with

kidney disease

- For anthrax give cipro q 12h for

60 days.

- If giving cipro in IV adminster over

60 minutes in a large vein

- Decrease in manifestation of UTI

- Negative urine culture

- No evidence of suprainfection

- WBC count within normal range

- Abstain from intercoause of taking

cipro for an STD

- Complete the entire course of

therapy

- Observe for yeast infections

- Avoid excessive sun exposure
