Gentamycin/Tobramycin 45

Aminoglycoside

A bacteriocidal that destroys microorganisms by

disrupting protein synthesis

- IM (Gentamycin)

- Inhalation (Tobramycin)

- Penicillin (inactivates medication if used in the same IV)

- Loop diuretics (other ototoxic meds can increase the risk of

ototoxicity)

- Pregnancy risk D (positive evidence of human fetal risk)

- Use cautiously in clients with kidney disease or hearing impairments

- Ototoxicity

- Nephrotoxicity

- Intense neuromuscular blockade (respiratory depression/muscle

weakness)

- Hypersensitivity (rash and paresthesia (prickling feeling))

- Treats gram-negative bacilli

- Monitor I & O

- Monitor kidney function test

- monitor peak and trough levels

- Monitor for allergic effects

- Do hearing tests

- Resolution of infection manifestations

- Resolution of UTI manifestations

- Report changes in hearing

- Take full course of therapy even if

manifestation have been relieved

before the full course is finished.
