-Levels of less than 1 mg/dl. -ECG will have prlong PR intervals, widened QSR, and depresion of ST segment.

  • Monitor magnesium, potassium and calcium levels.

  • Monitor cardiac status

  • Monitor deep tendon reflexes

  • Monitor neurological status

  • Measurements of magnesium,

potassium, and calcium

  • ECG testing
  • Measure serum albumin levels
  • Asses GI function

Serum magnesium level less than

1/dl

An electrolyte imbalance also related to hypocalcemia and hypokalemia. Magnesium supports muscle/nerve function and energy production.

-Changes in personality -Nystagmus (eyeball twitching) -Babinski, Chvostek, Trousseau signs -Hypertension, Tachycardia, dysrhythmias

-Avoid alcohol -Eat foods high in magnesium (green leafy vegetable/milk/seafood/bananas)

  • Deficient nutrient intake

  • Increased GI losses (diarrhea)

  • Impaired absorption in small intestine

  • Increased renal excretion/ kidney disease

  • Loop/thiazide diruetic use

  • Seisure precaution

-Fall precaution

  • Oral magneium

suplements can

cause diahrrea

  • Dietician

  • Cardiologist

  • Discuss a well balanced diet -Medication information (magnesium supplements)

  • Alcholism treatment (if needed)

  • Magnesium

sulfate given IM

or IV

  • Oral

magnesium

supplements

Administration of

magnesium through

suplement, IM, IV, or diet.

  • Seizures
  • Arrhythmias
  • Death
